What is the cheapest and fastest commute from west Staten Island to Mid-Town Manhattan?
Q. I am staying at an apartment near 200 Boscombe Avenue Staten Island, NY 10309 and need to get to address 241 East 51st Street New York, NY 10022-6502 from July 10-18th. I will have a car, but can't afford to pay for parking in NYC. Is there free parking by the ferry in SI?

A. I would recommend the express bus. You save yourself the trouble and expense of finding parking and can doze off on the way to Manhattan. You can take the AE7 from the Outerbridge Crossing Park-and-Ride to Madison Avenue at East 51st Street. You can walk to 241 East 51st Street at 2nd Avenue. I think the fare is $6 each way. (By the way, I think parking at the Park-and-ride is free if you can't walk there) You can also take the X22 from Amboy Road/Richmond Valley Road. Take it to Madison Avenue/East 48th Street and go to East 50th Street and take the M27 or M50 over to 2nd Avenue, and walk 1 block to East 51st Street. The fare is $5.50 for the X22, with a free transfer to the M27/M50. Finally, you can take the Staten Island Railway… [cont.]

Q. I'm thinking of moving to Staten Island, but I have a job in the city. I want to know if it's going to be impossible to commute. Also, if I move, I am wondering how it would be possible to get someone to drive there to move my stuff. Anyone got the answers? Thanks!

A. The ferry crossing is 25 minutes, and during morning and evening rush hours there is a ferry every 15 to 20 minutes. Time to reach the ferry terminal from points on Staten Island range from under 10 minutes for areas such as Todt Hill or West Brighton, to as bad as 45 minutes from Tottenville. You can also use the Verrazano Bridge into Brooklyn, and then drive up the Gowanus Expressway to the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. With all the construction work currently being done on the Bridge and the Gowanus Xpwy this is an adventure in tedium, taking an hour most mornings. A. If we're talking about human population of Staten Island, then it's gene flow. Human populations these days aren't genetically isolated, and Staten Island isn't even geographically isolated for our species. > Is there evidence that Staten Islanders have experienced environmental hazards to their health and survival? LOL. Everyone experiences some environmental hazards.

Once there, exit the subway and walk a short distance to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. For the trip to the Central Park Zoo, take the uptown (northbound) "R" or "W" lines (Yellow Line) from Whitehall Street-South Ferry to 5th Avenue. What's the most unique thing for teens to do in Staten Island?
Q. My friends and I want to go to Staten Island because none of us have been there. Is there a town where all the shops are? What's the best place to take pictures? Are there any cool places that aren't seen in the rest of NYC? How do you get to those places?

A. Staten Island is known as "the borough of parks", so there is a lot of beautiful outdoor places to go, such as the Greenbelt or Clove Lakes Park, which also has ice skating I believe. There are many historic places to go, like Historic Richmond Town and Snug Harbor. But if you want to focus on more teen-like things, there is Roller Jam USA on the south shore, a roller skating rink, there's the Pavilion, an ice skating rink, there's the Staten Island Mall, there's the Atrium, U.A., and Hylan Plaza movie theaters. There's mini golf and go-karting, I believe, on the North Shore, nearest to the Ferry. There's lots more to do, but this is most of what I am familiar with.

A. Until recently it had the world's largest garbage dump. It was closed in 2001, but was temporarily re-opened to handle the debris from the World Trade Center disaster of 9/11/01. How about Robert Moses and the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, which until recently was the world's longest suspension bridge? People hated him. Hated him. Also the NYC marathon begins in Staten Island. The first thing they do? Leave Staten Island by going over the bridge. A previous poster stated that Staten Island is not NYC. This is true, but Staten Island is one of the five boroughs that makes up NYC (the other four being Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx).

A. The closest airport that you will have to Staten Island is going to be either Newark, NJ or JFK in Long Island. I would probably go with JFK. I believe that it would be cheaper for all of the tolls that would have to be taken to get to and from the airports. I know that going across the Varrazano is about $48 in a semi going west.

Best way to Yankee Stadium from Staten Island?
Q. Hi all. I'm traveling to Yankee Stadium this coming weekend and was wondering what the correct/best route to The Stadium would be from Staten Island if I took the ferry across to Manhattan. Thanks!

Is there any plan to operate a subway from Manhattan to Staten Island?
Q. I am looking to evaluate real estate and obviously a direct connection other than the boat from manhattan to staten island would help

A. Since at least the 1920s there has been talk about connecting the Staten Island train with the New York City subway system via a new tunnel under the Narrows. The R line would have been the connecting point. Some preliminary digging was even done before World War II, but was rapidly abandoned. The proposal comes up again from time to time, but due to the enormous expense, it's unlikely to be built during our lifetimes.
