The sit-up is a strength training exercise commonly performed with the aim of strengthening the hip flexors and abdominal muscles. It begins with lying with the back on the floor, typically with the arms across the chest or behind the head and the knees bent in an attempt to reduce stress on the back muscles and spine, and then elevating both the upper and lower vertebrae from the floor until everything superior to the buttocks is not touching the ground. Situps can be dangerous due to high compressive lumbar load and may be replaced with the crunch in exercise programs. Abdominal muscular hypertrophyStrength exercises such as sit-ups and push-ups do not cause the spot reduction of fat. Gaining a 'six pack' requires both abdominal muscle hypertrophy training and fat loss over the abdomen—which can only be done by losing fat from the body as a whole. Unfortunately situp wont get you a flat stomach. Believe me. I've tried that method when I was clueless about weight loss. To get a flat stomach, you need to lose the fat on your stomach. You lose fat by eating a low calorie diet, working out, and cardio. Once I did all 3, my stomach became flatter. It works. Q. What are crunches and what are sit ups? What's the difference? And do they really work to help you burn fat? Asked by L.A Princess - Sun Sep 30 02:02:17 2007 - - 2 Answers - 2 Comments A. Hey. The above answer is not entirely accurate. A sit up is when you bring your chin to your knee and essentiall 'sit up' from a lying flat position A crunch is when you basically just lie flat and contract your abs, so you don't really lift your whole upper body off the floor They're not really the best exercises for burning fat, unless you do heaps of them. If you're looking for something to just to just do at home, jumping jacks would burn fat a lot faster! Oh and as for getting a nice 6 pack, you need to really cut down your body fat before you'll start seeing those. Just doing crunches wouldn't do it. Also, stick to the crunches as sit ups have a higher rate of injury :) Answered by Jger - Sun Sep 30 06:30:33 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "sit ups" |
