Sedentary lifestyle is a medical term used to denote a type of lifestyle with a lack of physical exercise. It is commonly found in both the developed and developing world and characterized by sitting, reading, watching television and computer use for much of the day with little or no vigorous physical exercise. It is known to contribute to obesity and cardiovascular disease.

Effects

A lack of physical exercise is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide.

One response that has been adopted by many organizations concerned with health and environment is the promotion of Active travel, which seeks to promote walking and cycling as safe and attractive alternatives to motorized transport. Given that many journeys are for relatively short distances, there is considerable scope to replace car use with walking or cycling, though in many settings this may require some infrastructure modification.

How do I start exercising again after years of being sedentary?
Q. I am 38, and haven't actively exercised in about 7 years. I was on track and field in high school and did a lot of cycling from about 1997 to 2001. Since then I haven't exercised except for the occasional walk or maybe a 30 minute jaunt on the elliptical trainer every now and then. Any advice for how to get back into walking and cycling without straining or overdoing it initially?

A. The most important response I can give you is "Choose exercises you enjoy!!!." That is the only way you will have any hope of sticking with it. Beyond that, start slowly and gradually build on strength and endurance! If it helps, keep a journal of your progress, but don't keep a journal if it turns having fun into another form of stress. Eat healthy meals. Stay hydrated. Have fun! Stay off of the bathroom scale. Look forward to just plain 'ol feeling better!!! Make sure you have the best shoes and equipment you can afford. It's not about looking good. It's about performing safely and comfortably. If you have any health issues, check with your doctor before starting any physical routine.

Where can I find a study that found that children in America prefer/tend toward sedentary activities?
Q. a reliable source- not just any .com i'm trying to write a paper proving that instead of going outside to play after school, they go to the mall, get fast food, or participate in a sedentary activity (playing games, watching TV, etc.) or that they spend their time on their computers or watching television, rather than outdoors exercising.

What effects does a sedentary lifestyle have on homeostasis?

A. homeostasis is rather a general topic as is sedentary lifestyle in my opinion. generally the effect is bad on the body's regulatory mechanism well living an unhealthy life, smoking, eating too much sugar, salt and fat make someone to be at higher risk of developing hypertension, diabetes, and coronary heart disease in most cases of hypertension, the cause is still unknown. its probably due to the blood pressure regulatory mechanism has been reset (desensitized) to a higher than normal level causing you to get hypertension in chronic smoking leading to chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD or COAD) some people's body are so used to high levels of carbon dioxide in their body that their carbon dioxide level regulatory mechanism… [cont.]
