Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Many works within the genre take place in fictional worlds where magic is common. Fantasy is generally distinguished from science fiction in that it does not provide a logical (or pseudo logical) explanation for the scientifically impossible events that occur, though there is a great deal of overlap between the two (both are subgenres of speculative fiction).

In popular culture, the genre of fantasy is dominated by its medievalist form, especially since the worldwide success of The Lord of the Rings books by J. R. R. Tolkien. In its broadest sense however, fantasy comprises works by many writers, artists, filmmakers, and musicians, from ancient myths and legends to many recent works embraced by a wide audience today.

Fantasy is a vibrant area of academic study in a number of disciplines (English, cultural studies, comparative literature, history, medieval studies). Work in this area ranges widely, from the structuralist theory of Tzvetan Todorov, which emphasizes the fantastic as a liminal space, to work on the connections (political, historical, literary) between medievalism and popular culture.

Do you think the fantasy genre is becoming oversaturated with too many writers?
Q. Is the quality of fantasy literature dying? Will people become tired and bored of all the sorcery, hack and slash stories; is it becoming a little too repetitive? I imagine most young writers will try to do fantasy, will this kill the genre?

A. a lot of people are starting to reinvent the genre, i think. like now a lot of stories are turning more modern or they are retellings of older stories. personally i like the fantasy writers that try putting a little humor in their stories. as long as there continues to be good fantasy books, fantasy will remain my favorite genre

How does fantasy football work in the playoffs?
Q. I started a free fantasy league for the playoff's. I believe we are just going to have six people total. What is the best way to set it up for the playoffs? Should we start to eliminate teams as the playoff's go on? Thanks a ton everyone.

A. If it is a playoff league where you are only scoring for the playoffs then you have two options, both of them involving a salary cap. You can either have players select a new roster each week, staying under the salary cap. Alternatively, you could give everyone a limited number of trades which would place a premium on getting the right players from the right teams. Finally, you could set it up where you select your roster each week but you can't reuse players. (yes I know, that was three ways). Just keep score throughout the playoffs like a normal league would.

What is the difference between fantasy and reality?
Q. What I'm looking for is: 1- How would you define fantasy and reality? 2- On average, does any idea considered fantasy mean that the idea will never come true? 3- Is their any chance that a person becomes so attached to fantasy that the person loses track of reality? 4- Why do you think so many children magical fantasy books are controversial? Is it because many believe that children can lose track of reality? 5- Why do you think many people are drawn to fantasies? Thanks!

A. 1. fantasy = The creative imagination reality = The quality or state of being actual or true 2.no, you can make fantasy's come true. I have fantasized of being with a handsome man on the beach at sunset, and it happened, so not all fantasys are unattainable 3.yes,Schizophrenia, would be an example of not being able to tell the difference between fantasy vs reality 4. I don't know, I see nothing wrong in fantasy books, using ones imagination,to be someone else or someplace else is not bad, as long as you know the difference. which most ppl do unless they have a mental disorder, boys can be superman and pretend to fly, but know inreality they cannot. 5. its like daydreaming, its sometimes good to not have the worries that reality so often… [cont.]

Fantasy is a genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, and/or setting. Fantasy is generally distinguished from science fiction and horror by the expectation that it steers clear of scientific and macabre themes, respectively, though there is a great deal of overlap between the three (which are subgenres of speculative fiction).
