Basketball is a team sport in which two teams of 5 players try to score points against one another by placing a ball through a 10 foot (3.048 m) high hoop (the goal) under organized rules. Basketball is one of the most popular and widely viewed sports in the world.

Points are scored by throwing (shooting) the ball through the basket from above. The team with more points at the end of the game wins, but additional time (overtime) may be issued when the scores of both teams are the same. The ball can be advanced on the court by bouncing it (dribbling) or passing it between teammates. Disruptive physical contact (foul) is penalized and free throws will be issued if the player is fouled while shooting the ball and there are restrictions on how the ball can be handled (violations).

Through time, basketball has developed to involve many common techniques of shooting, passing and dribbling, as well as players' positions, and offensive and defensive structures. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play center or one of two forward positions, while shorter players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed, play the guard positions. While competitive basketball is carefully regulated, numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. In some countries, basketball is also a popular spectator sport.

While competitive basketball is primarily an indoor sport, played on a basketball court, less regulated variations played in the outdoors have become increasingly popular among both inner city and rural groups.

What position on a basketball team do you consider to be the most important? and why?
Q. i know basketball is a team sport, but each position is unique and specialize in certain things that other positions don't. So, what position on a basketball team do you consider to be the most important? and why?

A. I'd say center. Red Auerbach always said that if you are building a championship team, you need a great center. Who am I to argue with genius? I think PG is an important position as well. However, I don't think you need a great PG to win a championship. I think you just need a good floor leader that makes good decisions and gets the ball to the open man. Derek Fisher wasn't a great PG during the Lakers 3 peat. Rondo wasn't a great PG last season. Stockton and Kidd never won a championship. Of course there are exceptions to winning without a great center. The Bulls never had one during their dynasty. But, I think it makes winning a lot easier, when you have a dominant big man.

How can I develop good basketball skills?
Q. I am planning on joining my school's basketball team this fall; I've always been told that I have pretty good skills, but I know that I'm not good enough to play on the team because they are all very competitive and experienced. So what can I do to improve my basketball skills? Thank you!

A. Practice a lot and keep trying to improve. You have to work hard. With time, you'll make a lot of progress. Try doing drills. Watch a lot of NBA basketball because you'll definitely get more knowledge about the game and a higher basketball IQ and everything. Observe the players closely and try to do what they do. You'll also learn a lot of new moves from watching. Watching NBA basketball also helps you have better court instincts so you can think more quickly.

How to choose jersey numbers for basketball players?
Q. I'm doing a project which includes choosing basketball players and their salaries. I need to pick their jersey numbers, but I don't know how. I'm not really good at basketball, so does it matter what number goes out to who? I am choosing real players from already existing basketball teams, that's what I'm suppose to do. I'm also changing their salaries, and I don't know what I should do about the numbers because if I keep their old jersey numbers there might be two players with the same one.
