Hearing impairment or deafness refers to conditions in which individuals are fully or partially unable to detect or perceive at least some frequencies of sound which can typically be heard by members of their species. Use of the term impaired implies that deafness presents an inherent disadvantage to an animal, a view that is rejected within the Deaf culture movement, where the terms Deaf and hard of hearing are preferred. Q. Wondered what kind of breed or mixed dogs make great dogs for the deaf? There is training classes for deaf people with dogs, but theyre so expensive. I have a german shepherd part doberman dog, 6 yrs old female. Asked by Stormy - Mon Feb 6 15:14:15 2006 - - 75 Answers - 0 Comments A. Our home and dog are to have a two-hour evaluation for training as an assistive dog this Thursday, 2/8/06. The organization doing this is a local one, Paws With A Cause.(1) Paws With A Cause follows roughly the same criteria as Dogs For The Deaf, a west-coast organization. (2) Size of dog is not as imporant as it is to seeing-eye dogs, since they do not need to be in a harness to be physically comfortable to the human. Lap-size dogs are perfectly adequate and much easier to take care of in a space-limited environment. Q. I have heard of several deaf children that have starting going to school when they are 2 or 3 yrs old. Why? Is it different state to state? I'm in michigan and was wondering if anyone knows about when a deaf child should start school here. Or if you have a timeline would be great too. Thanks. Asked by Lisa - Wed Nov 19 18:57:36 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Consider first, that 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents. Most of these parents don't find out that their child is deaf right away. They also (not all but the majority) don't learn sign language. This leaves the child with the chance for severe learning delays, due to lack of language acquisition. They start earlier so that they can learn sign language from a trained professional. This enables them to have a better start when they actually start schooling, and it gives them an opportunity to be around other deaf children and better socialization. I don't think there are any laws necessarily stating when deaf children have to begin school, but the wise parents choose to enroll them in school early, or learn sign language… [cont.] Answered by trehuginhipee - Fri Nov 21 02:22:16 2008 How do deaf cats know how to meow?
Q. My family recently got a white, blue-eyed, completely deaf cat who meows all the time to get our attention. I was just wondering how in the world she knows to meow since she can't hear herself. Asked by katekintail - Fri Jan 6 13:23:29 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is possible that your deaf cat will meow more BECAUSE she can't hear herself. By instinct, she is trying to communicate and command attention. She has no ability to reason that she isn't being heard. Sadly, being she's deaf she isn't going to hear your demands that she shut up. And no sense giving her a name... she isn't going to come when you call her.
