Physical exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health. It is performed for many different reasons. These include strengthening muscles and the cardiovascular system, honing athletic skills, weight loss or maintenance and for enjoyment. Frequent and regular physical exercise boosts the immune system, and helps prevent the "diseases of affluence" such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and obesity. It also improves mental health, helps prevent depression, helps to promote or maintain positive self-esteem, and can even augment an individual's sex appeal or body image. Childhood obesity is a growing global concern and physical exercise may help decrease the effects of childhood obesity in developed countries.

A. The best way is to just boast. Tell her how awesome you feel after a workout. Invite her along. If she's feeling dumpy, suggest working out. In the end, however, only your friend can convince herself that she should workout. All of the persuasions in the world can't make someone hit the gym if they're unwilling to put in the effort to do so.

What can I do to avoid the shin splints that come with physical exercise?

A. I get these occasionally from long soccer practice/jogging. Stretching the shin area helps decrease pain. Try flexing your foot and ankle towards your body. Use you hand to push the foot closer until you get a good stretch. You should be able to feel it stretching your whole shin area.
