How can I pass an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT)?
Q. I'm being released to active duty in a month. In order to be released I need to pass a 2-2-2 and height & weight. How can I lose 10 pounds and pass an APFT in a little less than a month.

A. Bill's basically right. Drink only water. No fast food. Eat foods high in protein. Do at least two two minute sets of push ups and sit ups before each run on run days. Do a day of sprints (60 second sprint, 120 seconds walking), a day of medium distance running 2.5-3.0 miles and a day of long distance running 4.0-5.0 miles each week. On your off run days, do LOTS of push ups (different types, diamonds, wide arm, etc) and do various ab exercises (crunches, flutter kicks, etc). Take one day off a week. You'll improve dramatically, but if you're way off, you won't make it.

A. Well the best way to get into a good plan is to take baby steps. So I would recommend a common routine lots of people use which is cardio one day and do weights another. Abs you could do every day. I am guessing you are in the Army so you must have access to a gym if not thats cool. So to get ready for a run I always tell people to not focus on the miles just focus on time. ITs easier for some one to go on a 20 minute run then to say I am going to go run 3 miles and then dissappoint yourself. If you are just getting started I would say run for 20 minutes on those 3 days and go at you pace dont feel intimidated to run faster because your muscles will grow stronger and you willl increase your cardio no matter what. after about 2 weeks of… [cont.]

When you do your APFT(Army Physical Fitness Test) do you have a time limit?
Q. When you have to do your APFT do you have a time limit? Not when you have to do you 2-mile run...but when you have to do your push-ups and sit-ups. Do you have to do it all at once or can you take 10 second breaks when you're tired and then finish the rest...or something like that. I'm just wondering if you have to do your APFT straight through or if you can take little short breaks then finish the rest. Please only answer if you have army experience!
Asked by tonn - Thu Feb 26 07:55:51 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. you have two minutes to do each aspect:, sit ups, push ups. there will be a break in between each component. I know in the Navy you have a partner for the push ups and sit ups and your break is when they are doing theirs. Your score is based on how many you crank out in those two minutes. the run is timed based on age and gender.

What were your APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test ) scores?
Q. I did pretty well for an old geezer. 32 to 36 year old category. I'm a 34 year old male. Push ups in 2 minutes / 114 push ups... 139 points Sit ups in 2 minutes / 102 sit ups... 126 points 2 mile run / 11:58... 113 points 378 extended score I prepared a lot for this test because I have a younger brother who is 24 that said I couldn't pass it at 34 when I joined the military; and he was laughing at me... I also use to smoke cigarettes so maybe that was the reason he though I would not do well . My brother scored an overall 261 score. I beat him by over 100 points. He's not laughing anymore. A NCO scored it. I can actually beat that score now. I've improved my sit-ups. I use to do alot of body building so this wasn't difficult for… [cont.]

A. never did better than 1330 or so on the 2 mile run...IMO the pt test is outdated though. i like what fire departments do for their physical fitness tests where its all job related. should be the same for the army, sinec your not going to be running in shorts and a t shirt in iraq. my old platoon had a lenghty conversation about this a while back, decided that a good pt test would be: 100m sprint, dips, pull ups, and a 4 mile ruck would better judge yoru physical condition.

does the army still discharge people for failing the army physical fitness test (APFT)?
Q. i have a friend in the army and im curious about a lot of things and confused that's why i ask a lot of questions pretaining to the military.
Asked by pacsunxciii - Fri Apr 21 03:21:29 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've been out for 10 years now, but yes, the Army will discharge a person for failing the APFT. Normally, the soldier is put on a remedial fitness program in hopes of helping him to meet the standard. The soldier is usually "flagged" during that time, which means he is ineligible for awards, promotions, etc. If eventually he can pass an APFT, the flag is removed. If after a certain amount of time, the soldier does not improve, he can be discharged.

Applying for a Army ROTC 4-year scholarship, do i have to do a APFT or the presidential physical fitness test?
Q. So I am applying for a Army ROTC 4-year scholarship and i am going to apply to Norwich University. On Norwich's website it said for a AROTC scholarship that you have to complete a APFT but from a letter from the Army they said that i have to complete a Presidential Physical Fitness test. So which one is it? If its the Presidential one, I am already set if its the APFT, I need to work on my 2 mile run

A. To get the Army ROTC scholarship, you have to pass the APFT at 60% in each event.

British army physical fitness test?
Q. Hi, I'm wanting to join the British army and i was wondering if in the APFT all the other tests but what if i didn't do as well in press ups would i be failed or would i have to re-take the press-ups test? Thanks

A. The basic army physical fitness test is not about how many press up's you can do. If you cannot do 10 there is something physically wrong with you. I'm a 51 year old smoker and can do that with one arm.

I need to ace the Army Physical Fitness Test?
Q. I have until May before I ship off, but I need to ace the APFT by then. I can barely run 1 mile, and I can do so in just under 8 minutes. In two minutes per exercise I can do 37 push ups and 38 sit ups. I would like to be able to run 2 miles in under 13 minutes, and be able to run 6 miles in under an hour. I would also like to be able to 71 push ups in 2 minutes, and 78 sit ups in 2 minutes. I'm working out everyday, but I feel as though my routine isn't producing results. Thank you in advance!

Removal of an APFT flag after getting a temporary profile?
Q. I have an Army Reserve soldier that failed a PT test because of a medical issue that came up during the run. Three days later he got a no-run-pushup-situp temporary profile from the VA. The temporary profile looks like it may continue for quite a while, but in the meantime he is still flagged for failing an APFT. Is there a way to remove this flag because of extenuating circumstances ? AR 600-8-2 paragraph 1-13c reads: Failure to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) or failure to take the APFT within the required period. Remove the flag (code E/type report) on the day the soldier passes the APFT or at expiration term of service (ETS) / expiration of service agreement (ESA)/mandatory release date (MRD). Do I have enough time to get in shape for my 2 mile run?
Q. I have an APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) coming up at the end of May and I have three times events that I must do which consist of at least 50 situps in 2 minutes, at least 17 push ups in 2 minutes and be able to run two miles in under 19:36. I always pass my PT test and push up and sit ups are never my problem, it's always my dang run. It's been super cold out where I live all winter and since it just now started warming up I've been running more and more. This week I ran 3x. On Tues. I ran a mile and a half and then later that day I ran another mile and a half (all outside) then Wed. I only ran a mile and a half, then yesterday I ran two miles and today I took it easy again and only ran a mile and a half. I plan on running like… [cont.]

APFT at MEPS for Army OCS?
Q. Do you have to pass a physical fitness test (push-ups, sit-ups, and running) at a MEPS before enlisting in order to get accepted into OCS? I am a civilian applying for OCS and am well qualified, but my recruiter told me I have to do 42 sit-ups, 36 pushups, and run 2-miles in 17:42. I should have no problem with running but I am concerned about the push-ups and sit-ups since I haven't done those in years. I can't find any information anywhere about OCS requiring a physical fitness test prior to enlisting.
Asked by Juwu - Wed Apr 8 12:32:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, however you don't take this test at meps. You need to take this test with your recruiter 30 days before shipping out in order to qualify to leave. However your standard stated is only a score of 150 out of 300 or 50% on the Army APFT test. As an officer you will be expected to be an example. It would be wise to work up to at least a 300. This requirement is specific to Army OCS candidates. Normal enlisted soldiers will not be required to take the test prior to shipping.

Can you be forced to be on remedial PT if you did not fail the Army PT test?
Q. Recently my Army unit decided that everyone that did not score atleast a 225 and atleast 70 in each event of the APFT would be placed on remedial PT along side the PT failures and Overweights. Is this a fair and just thing to do? Now I know the whole "you joined the army, not the boy scouts" thing that people love to throw out there (mainly due to lack of brains), but sorry, yeah I joined the army, but I'm not a robot either. I'm not infantry or anything like that either, so the arguement of "we need to be fit for combat" thing is not applicable here. I went to combat twice, and neither deployment was I put in a situation where I had to rely on my "superior physical fitness." So if I'm being treated unfairly I believe I have the… [cont.]
Asked by Michael - Mon Apr 19 14:34:14 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can be placed on remedial PT in order to help you improve and achieve the unit goal. You cannot be punished for not meeting that goal. So if you are getting a NCOER, you should still get a "Success" mark for the APFT portion. If you get a "Needs Improvement", you might want to consider pushing it up the chain. I had a brigade commander who decided that if you did not score at least a 235 you could not hold a leadership position in his brigade. I went to my company commander and told him that he would be getting a new First Sergeant shortly because I would not meet that standard. Once the Command Sergeants Major got involved, the 'policy' quickly became a memory. But we were still 'encouraged' to do better.

Are women treated equal in the military?
Q. This is probably going to send a flak my way, but it's a genuine question. Look at the following charts on the inequality of physical fitness between men and women in the military: i believe in equality for women, but according to that they're not equal they get paid the same as a male servicemember but testing on an easier level. Again, I would like to apologize to the women who are going to call me a chauvinist pig, I swear this is an honest to God, genuine question I don't know the answer to. (I HATE trying to be political correct) Also, this is not a question of competency, there are women I've met in the military that make me look like a shitbag, merely a question on the minimum testing everyone in the military must go… [cont.]
Asked by Jon - Thu Jun 28 05:40:13 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Unfortunately the answer is no. It's not just the physical fitness test, it's what is expected from a male compared to a female. A male drops out of a hump and he has 4-5 Sgts on his butt, a female drops out, and she gets into the back of a hummer. As a GySgt, I made it a point to have the same expectations of my Females as I did my Males, but the cold hard facts are that this is not a common practice. With that being said, females still do a terrific job in the Marines and certainly are entitled to serve their country in this capacity, but if anyone believes that they are equal or even that it is fair are seriously mistaken.
